Oily skin is not all bad. You are less likely to develop lines and wrinkles and your skin will always be well moisturised. But, oily skin can mean that makeup is more of a challenge and the biggest difficulty is keeping your makeup looking great all day along, especially in the hot summer months. No one wants to have to spend loads of time painstakingly perfecting their makeup, only to have it slide from their face a few hours later, so here are ten tips on how to make makeup last all day, even if you have oily skin.
1. Cleanse your face properly in the morning
The first thing that is an absolute must, if you have oily skin, is to make sure that you cleanse your face thoroughly every morning. You should be using a cleanser that has at least 2% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid will break down and remove the oil on your skin, but it won’t dry your skin out. You should also make sure that you wash your hands before you cleanse your face, or you will transfer the oil on your hands, straight onto your skin.
2. Clean your T zone with rubbing alcohol
If you are particularly prone to oil on your T-zone, then a quick swipe with rubbing alcohol each morning will help to combat that. Just put a drop or two of rubbing alcohol on some cotton wool and wipe it quickly over your forehead, nose and your chin. You should only use a very small amount of rubbing alcohol, though, or it can dry out your skin too much.
3. Be careful about what you eat
Another important tip on how to make makeup last all day is to be careful about what you eat. If you already have oily skin, then the last thing you want to do is make yourself sweat more. Avoid hot, spicy food, and watch the alcohol too. Try to limit your drinking to just one drink a night and leave the spicy food for the days when you will be at home. Also, you could try eating more foods that contain Vitamin A, such as carrots and spinach. Vitamin A can help to slow down the production of oil in your skin.
4. Moisturise with an oil free moisturiser
Even oily skin needs moisturising and, if you don’t moisturise at all, your skin will go into overdrive and produce even more oil. Use light, oil-free, no-cream based moisturiser and, when you use it, make sure that you allow plenty of time for the moisturiser to sink into your skin, before you apply any makeup.
5. Try putting powder on before foundation
Putting a light layer of powder on, before applying foundation, might sound a bit strange, but it really is a good way to keep the oil at bay for longer. The powder will help to fill up the pores in your skin and stop the oil coming through. Using powder first, could keep your face oil free for up to eight hours at a time.
6. Use a matte primer
Next good tip on how to make makeup last all day is to use a matte primer. A primer is good for any skin type, but for oily skin it is an essential. Apply a matte primer and it will give you a smooth canvas on which to apply the rest of your makeup. More importantly, it will also provide the perfect base that will keep your makeup in place for hours and hours. If you have an oily complexion, you should, at least, use an oil-free, anti-shine primer on your forehead, nose and chin, after you have cleansed your face.
7. Avoid using concealer on your eyelids
Quite a lot of women use concealer on their eyelids, but if you have oily skin, then this is definitely not a good idea for you. Use a primer that is specifically designed for the eyelids and it will help to soak up grease during the day. A concealer is designed only to give you an even colour, so it won’t be anywhere near as effective at keeping your eyeshadow in a place as a proper primer would be.
8. Use the right foundation
Selecting the right foundation for oily skin is another good tip on how to make makeup last all day and it can make all the difference too. For long lasting makeup, choose an oil-free mineral based matte foundation that has no fragrance. It’s best to apply foundation with a brush, if you have oily skin. That will help to fill up the pores better and absorb more of the excess oil.
9. Try a clay facemask once a week
Using a clay facemask once a week will help keep oily skin under control and that will help your makeup stay where it should. One of the best clays to use, if you have oily skin, is Kaolin clay, which is great for absorbing oil. When you use a clay facemask, you might get better results if you don’t leave it on until it has dried completely; wash it off when it is still a bit damp. If you leave it to dry out, it might draw too much oil from your skin and leave your skin feeling very dry.
10. Carry blotters and powder with you
Our final tip on how to make makeup last all day is to carry blotters and powder with you. A common mistake that many women make is that they use powder on their face during the day without blotting first. When you need to tackle shiny skin, always blot first and then apply powder, or you will end up with a horrible cakey mess!
