Coughing fits are never fun, especially when they persist for a long time. And while some over-the-counter drugs can treat them, we’ll be the first to admit that cough syrup tastes terrible. Besides, a lot of people are suspicious of taking any type of medication anyway.
Luckily, there’s a natural, inexpensive, and—most importantly—effective solution. All you’ll need is honey, coconut oil, flour, medical tape, and a napkin!
Coughs are caused by allergens irritating the throat or the bronchial tubes filling up with mucus. This can lead to dry heaving, chronic coughs, and even bronchitis. Luckily, these symptoms can be treated naturally, safely, and for very little money with something called a honey wrap.
A honey wrap is a napkin soaked in a paste made from coconut oil, flour, and honey that can be strapped to your chest.
This is a great option for those who want to avoid over-the-counter drugs—and their slew of side effects, like light-headedness, sedation, drowsiness, and dizziness.
The most important ingredient is the coconut oil. Packed with lauric acid, it helps break down the lipid (“fatty”) layer around certain virus cells, creating an opening for your immune system to attack it.
Honey, meanwhile, has been known to relieve coughs and itchy, sore throats when taken by mouth. It can have similar effects when applied topically.
To make the wrap, mix honey with a teaspoon of flour, then add a small amount of coconut oil. Slather the mixture on a napkin, and strap it to the middle of your chest with adhesive medical tape. Adults can wear it all night, but children should only wear the compress for two to three hours. It’s quite effective the first time around, but there’s no harm in replacing the compress every so often until you feel better.
Even if you don’t have a cough at the moment, it’s always a good idea to have the necessary ingredients handy just in case. Remember, though: if you’re feeling sick, your best bet is always to see a doctor!
